The Element of Water

Updated: Jul 3

How We are Made of the Elements

As an Elemental Celebrant and Green Witch I feel the connection with the Elements deeply, and work with them consistently in my daily personal and business practices.

These are the Elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water - they make up the world around us and without them we would not exist.

The Elements have been acknowledged and honoured by all cultures around the world across all time - they are woven into our very soul essence, with Spirit or Ether being the fifth Element.

I always begin my ceremonies and rituals by welcoming them in. My altars always have representations of them on, they flow in a never ending spiral connected to all that is.

And so here is my mini series on the Elements, I will keep adding to them as I learn more about them, and there will always be more to learn....

The Element of Water

Water is the soft, fluid, feminine Element that connects us to the depths of our intuition, our dreams and the psychic aspects of ourselves. Water connects us to the Moon, and the tides.

Water can be a gentle stream, or the soft Spring rain - it can be the fast flowing river, the raging waterfall and have the destructive power of a tsunami. Our bodies are made up of 70% water* - as is our Mother Earth - it's no surprise then that our tears are salty, like the oceans. *(well, that's not quite accurate, it is structured water - see below)

Water is connected to our emotions. We mirror water when we keep emotions stuck in our bodies, it becomes stagnant, like cut off pools and puddles, however, when we allow our emotions to flow freely through us, out of us, whether through tears of joy or tears of sorrow, the energy shifts, allowing stuck and stagnant energy and emotions to flow away out of our systems.

In Taoism, the five elements (also known as Wu Xing or five phases) are Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water.

I teach 5 Elements Qigong, which spoke to me instantly because of the Elemental connection. In Taoism, these elements are not just literal materials but represent different qualities, energies, and phases of transformation found in nature and within the human body. They are interconnected and constantly interacting in cycles of generation and control, influencing everything from seasons and emotions to health and the Universe itself.

Water is Yin (feminine) and represents stillness, Winter. It is associated with the kidneys and bladder, and with the emotions of fear and anxiety.

The Water element, in Ayurvedic Yogic traditions, is the source of fluidity, flexibility, and purification. Water sustains life and symbolizes emotions, intuition, and creativity. It is associated with the sensation of taste and controls body fluids such as blood, lymph, and reproductive secretions.

The Ancient Origins of Water

The water on Earth is incredibly ancient, far older than we might imagine. Some of it is even older than the Earth itself, formed on cosmic dust grains as our solar system was being born over 4.5 billion years ago.

Scientists believe water was delivered to Earth in its early days by planetesimals, tiny, rocky bodies that helped form the planets. Tiny droplets of water clung to these space travellers and were carried here during Earth’s formation.

There’s evidence that liquid water was flowing on Earth as early as 4.4 billion years ago. That means the waters of this world have been cycling through oceans, clouds, rivers, and bodies - including our own - for eons.... This is why you may hear the expression "we are made of star dust", because we are!!!

Even now, the water we drink, bathe in, and bless is not new. It’s been part of this planet’s dance since the beginning, rising, falling, returning. It holds memory. It carries the story of our Mother Earth herself.

You’re Not Just Made of Water… You’re Made of Living, Structured Water

Most of us grew up learning that the body is around 70% water, H₂O, but the truth is, inside your body, water behaves very differently than the liquid we fill our glasses up with.

At the cellular level, water forms a fourth phase - not solid, not liquid, or vapor, but a structured, gel-like state known as H₃O₂, also called Exclusion Zone (EZ) water. This isn’t fringe or pseudo science, it’s based on the research of Professor Gerald Pollack (University of Washington), who found that near hydrophilic surfaces, like your cell membranes, fascia, and blood vessel linings, water organizes itself into a negatively charged, crystalline form.

This structured water:

  • Stores and holds energy, acting like a living battery

  • Responds to light, movement, and vibration

  • Drives flow in the body, even before the heart begins to beat in embryos

  • Plays a role in cellular communication, detoxification, and overall vitality

Pollack’s book The Fourth Phase of Water offers a deep dive into this field, backed by peer-reviewed experiments.

So how do we build and support structured water in the body?

It doesn’t come from tap water or plastic bottles. It’s built from natural elements that recharge and enliven the water inside you:

  • Sunlight – especially infrared light – enhances EZ water in your tissues

  • Movement and breath – stimulate flow, especially in fascia and lymph

  • Minerals and electrolytes – from spring water, sea salt, and foods like cucumber and herbs like hibiscus and lemon balm that support cellular hydration

  • Raw fruits and vegetables – naturally contain structured water

  • Earthing – walking barefoot helps balance your body’s electrical charge

  • Sound, frequency & intention – water responds to vibration, as shown by Masaru Emoto’s experiments - see below.

This is why practices like qigong, sound healing, barefoot walking, and sunlight exposure aren’t just feel-good rituals - they are foundational to how the body structures and holds energy.

You are not just made of water. You are made of living water, infused with light, breath, and rhythm.

You’re not a machine to be fixed, you’re a fluid, intelligent being, designed to move, vibrate, and recharge with nature. When you feel low, inflamed, foggy, or fatigued… don’t just reach for another supplement. Ask yourself:

  • Have I been out in nature today?

  • Have I moved my body and breathed deeply?

  • Have I nourished my cells with sufficient (herbal ) hydration?

  • Have I grounded, connected to the Earth?

Healing isn’t always about adding more. Often, it’s about realigning with what your body already knows. Let the water inside you remember its wisdom.

Water Holds Memory: Masaru Emoto and the Spirit of Water

Our bodies are resonant structures, vibrating at different frequencies - because we are fluid we are so responsive to our environments - what we expose ourselves to, what is put upon us - is all stored in our cells, our "water memory".

Water is not just physical, it’s energetic. And no one demonstrated this more beautifully than Dr. Masaru Emoto, a Japanese researcher who explored the connection between water, vibration, and human consciousness.

In his experiments, Emoto exposed water to different words, music, emotions, and intentions. Then he flash-froze the droplets and photographed the ice crystals. The results were nothing short of extraordinary.

  • Water that had been blessed, prayed over, or shown the words love, gratitude, or peace formed beautiful, symmetrical, star-like crystals.

  • Water exposed to anger, hatred, or phrases like you fool or I will kill you formed broken, chaotic, and distorted structures.

  • Classical music created elegant crystalline forms, while heavy metal or aggressive sounds shattered the structure.

While Emoto’s work has been debated in conventional science circles for its lack of standard controls, what it sparked in the holistic and consciousness community was profound: the realisation that water is a living, responsive mirror, not just to physical inputs, but to energy, emotion, sound, and intention.

And if water outside of us responds that way… what about the water within us?

We are, after all, as we have learned, mostly water. Our tears, our blood, the fluids that bathe our cells, they are all listening.

This is why in my work with sound healing, and seasonal ceremonies, I honour water as an intelligent, sacred ally, a vessel that holds memory, emotion, and the energetic imprint of our thoughts and the environments we move through. I find I get the best ideas flashed into my mind when I'm in the shower, and the deepest of meditations when I'm in the bath! And I'm not alone - many people say the same thing - which of course makes sense when we understand all of this.

Honouring Water in Daily Practice

As someone who works with both the physical and energetic body, through energy work, creating teas, tinctures, and sound healing, I know intention matters. Water feels. Water remembers. Water responds.

And so whenever you can, bless your water. The blessing and honouring of water as a sacred ritual is used in ceremonies around the world over, in all cultures (think of a christening!)

As a witch and a pagan, many of my practices involve the sacred gathering and blessing of water.

I go to my local sacred spring regularly to collect water. While we are there we create sacred space and hold ritual. We drum and sing. We give the spring energy and love. We put crystals, or offerings of special elixirs or food by it. With our sacred water we place it on our altars at home, use it in rituals and ceremonies, we write sacred words by our jars of blessed water and leave it out under the moon (or the sun!) to gather more power and energy.

We gather and work with our water with reverence and gratitude.

But you don't need to be a practicing anything to honour the sacredness of water. Whether it’s bathing with herbs, leaving offerings at a stream, or simply taking a moment to thank the water you drink, the rain that falls from the sky, or give a few kind words to your body - in its simplest form this will be enough to change the molecular structure and change the resonance.

Because when you nourish your inner waters with reverence, with intention, you restore something ancient. You come back into rhythm with the Element of Water, the element of emotion, intuition, dreams, flow, and deep memory.

And in this time of burnout, information overload, and disconnection… water invites us back to feeling.

With love, watery, and Green Blessings,
